The funny, fantastical and occasionally almost fatal life of living with giant breeds, times 4 for us. Even dressing can put your life in jeopardy with big dogs! Read the beginning of the blog “Dressing with Giants”:
Big dogs love shoes as most dogs do, it makes sense to take them off and put them away around any of them. But with most dogs you can safely put shoes ON.
Very, very gradually over your Big Dog’s life there is a power shift. You bought your puppy, he/she is yours.
Well as much as anyone can own another being. You tell them what to do, train them. She listens to you and life goes as it should. Until somewhere between 2 to 3 years, when you realize you are doing more listening than him. You may give your commands, but are they actually being carried out fully?
The scenario:
You wake up. Did you wake up yourself, by an alarm clock or by a nuzzle to your cheek? Not sure? Is your cheeks, nose and forehead slimy wet? Just cheeks could be crying during a dream, forehead not so much. Do your lungs feel like they just took their first breath in hours? A big dog just took his massive paws off your chest.
-your Big Dog just told you to get up.
You went to pee, you told them to wait at the door. Are they in there with you anyway?
-your Big Dogs are encouraging you to hurry up.
You start walking to your coffee station, do you make it there, or are you gradually misdirected to food bowls by massive shoulders conveniently at hip level to easily herd you?
-your Big Dog said food first.
They are eating, you are ready for coffee and the paper by yourself. Do you get to read that paper, or do you find yourself wanting to take your coffee to the door? I think that one is a mind trick, I don’t know how, they are not even in the room.
-your Big Dogs were ready to go outside.
You tell them to go potty-they give you that one, they needed to go. You tell them to hurry up and they look at you, then look away.
-they said “It’s not happening, YOU sit, YOU wait".
